Sales tax in the District itself is 6%, and is charged on bullion and coins. However, tax rates outside of the district vary. In Maryland, sales tax is 6% and is collected on coins and bullion, when the purchase is less than $1000. In Fairfax County, Virginia a 1% sales tax is collected on bullion and coins, in addition to a 4% tax rate in the state of Virginia.
